Locomotive Breath
The mighty oil-burning steam locomotive Baldwin Engine 9 was built in 1909 for the Nevada-California-Oregon Railway, one of the early Western narrow gauge runs. When this run ceased operating, Southern Pacific purchased the engine in the 1920s, and kept it running, sometimes intermittently, becoming one of the last narrow gauge steam locomotives running in the west. The “Slim Princess”, as it was nicknamed, continued heaving away into the 1950s, finally stopping when an ICC inspector declared that its boiler was shot.
